Work Begins on the Next Phase of the Trafford Section of the Bridgewater Way
The next phase of the Bridgewater Way work has started. This phase of work will concentrate on the section between Sale Bridge and Marsland Bridge, adding to the newly completed route between Sale and Stretford.
The contractor, J Cooney Ltd, has been appointed to complete the work which will provide a new Regional Route and pleasant environment for walkers and cyclists along the canal towpath from Sale Bridge to Marsland Bridge. The 0.6 mile long works in this phase in Trafford will add to the 2 mile stretch from Sale to Stretford, which has been completed. Once complete, these two sets of work in Trafford will add to the12 miles of the Bridgewater Way work already complete in Eccles, Leigh, Runcorn and ongoing work in Trafford.
These works in Trafford are part of Sustrans’ Links to Schools programme to provide better facilities to encourage children to walk or cycle to school. This element of work will create a safer and more pleasurable route to Springfield Primary School and Sale Grammar School's Claremont Centre.
The £520,000 Links to Schools project is funded by Trafford Council, Sustrans, the Bridgewater Canal Trust and canal owners, the Peel Group.
Louise Morrissey, Director of Land and Planning at Peel said, “We are pleased that work has begun on this stretch of the canal in Trafford. These works will create an attractive route for walkers and cyclists as well as encourage children to use the route to walk or cycle to school.”
Cllr Ken Weston, Chairman of the Bridgewater Way Steering Group in Trafford said, “This piece of work is another important link in the huge scheme to transform the Bridgewater Way. It will improve the towpath for all users and also provide better links for local pupils, keeping them healthy and allowing them to take in the appealing surroundings of the canal on their journeys to and from school.”
Peter green, Sustrans Area Manager for Greater Manchester commented, “It is great that work is underway to see a further section of the Bridgewater Canal improved. Peel and Trafford Council have moved quickly to make the most of match funding opportunities and have developed another high quality scheme. When complete local people will benefit from much improved and traffic free access to local schools and amenities. The new work builds on recently completed routes and will help encouraging people to make short local journeys on foot or by bike.”
Due to waterside construction works the team would like to inform the public that this section of the Bridgewater Canal towpath will be temporarily closed from early June until August. Care will be taken to minimise disruption to the public. For safety reasons, the public are asked to keep off the construction site during this time and use an alternative route
