Vicars Hall Bridge Replacement
The replacement of the Road Bridge at Vicars Hall has
completed with a total investment of just under £1million.
The new bridge replaces an old dilapidated bailey
bridge and increases the weight limit to permit 44 tonne vehicles.
The works included the construction of a 1km
surfaced access road, the removal of the old bridge and construction of the new
bridge. The abutments alone required 6,000 tonnes of stone and 18,000 bricks.
Before the works to replace the bridge could
commence a number of issues had to be overcome which involved detailed discussions
with Salford City Council, Wigan Borough Council, the Environment Agency and
Although these discussions delayed the commencement
of the works the Canal was reopened to navigation on 23rd May 2017 as
promised to allow visiting boats to attend the FBCC rally held at Worsley
Cruising Club between from 26th to 29th May 2017. The
bridge was open to traffic on 24th August 2017.
