Coronavirus (COVID-19) Communication to Bridgewater Canal Users

On 22nd February 2021, the Prime Minister announced the Government’s roadmap to cautiously ease lockdown restrictions in England, confirming the planned new roadmap out of lockdown. As we look forward to the canal flourishing and again welcoming visitors from other networks, we have set out the below timelines as we interpret them.

8th March - Private boating on an open boat permitted for recreation for a single household or bubble - subject to the requirements to stay local and minimise time spent away from home.

29th March - Private boating on an enclosed boat permitted for recreation for a single household or bubble of up to six people or two households per boat, if vessel is open. Provided social distancing can be maintained between people/different households.

12th April – Restrictions on overnight stays lifted for single households or bubble only.

17th May – Six people/two households on enclosed boats permitted.

Until the relaxation of all restrictions, we ask that all canal and towpath users continue to adhere to Government advice with regards to COVID-19 safety and social distancing. As ever, our main priority is the health and wellbeing of our staff, customers and the public who use our canal, towpath and facilities.

During the national lockdown, the Bridgewater Canal Company has continued to carry out the maintenance and works required to keep the canal towpath and facilities open for essential use.

All information in line with the planned easing of lockdown can be found on the Government website: Coronavirus (COVID-19): guidance and support - GOV.UK (

Once again thank you all for your co-operation and understanding during these difficult times as we look forward to a resumption of normality and a successful cruising season.

Best wishes,

Peter Parkinson
Director - Bridgewater Canal
