As you are aware, there have been a number of issues recently with regards to the elsan in Castlefield. The Company sent to a notice out to all boaters in December 2019 to advise that elsan was closed for repairs due to damages caused to the pump. A replacement pump then had to be ordered from Italy so that the necessary repairs could be carried out, the main sewer chamber also needed to be pumped out to remove the non-disposable items which had caused the damage.
During the installation of the new pump at the end of January, it was established that the non-disposable wipes that had been emptied into the elsan had blocked one of the outfalls. Our Maintenance team have been in discussion with neighbouring developers to establish where the pipes lie so that the blockage can be removed. Unfortunately this means that the elsan will to remain closed until we are able to locate the blocked pipe.
In the interim, we can confirm that the elsan and shower facilities at Stretford Marina will be open 24/7 for your convenience. We will also ensure that all boaters are informed once the repairs are complete. However, we ask that all boaters ensure that no non-disposable items are emptied into the elsan to avoid any further complications.
We apologise for any inconvenience and assure you that the Company is doing it’s best to ensure that the works are carried out as quickly as possible.
Kind regards, The Bridgewater Canal Company Ltd
