27 March 2020
During these challenging times, the Bridgewater Canal team has been working hard to make sure our response to the COVID-19 pandemic follows Government advice. Our main priority is the health and wellbeing of our staff, customers, and the general public who use our canal and towpath.
The canal and Bridgewater Way/towpath currently remain open, together with any Bridgewater Canal Company facilities, and we are liaising with canal businesses to ensure that services can still be provided for those who need them.
Following the Prime Minister’s announcement on 23rd March 2020 regarding the UK’s heightened response to the Coronavirus emergency, we request that:
All owners of boats on the Bridgewater Canal follow Government advice with regards to social distancing
There is no fishing until further notice
All users (pedestrians/cyclists/dog walkers/runners) should strictly observe social distancing at all times.
We will keep these restrictions under constant review in line with Government advice. For full Government guidance on Coronavirus, visit: www.gov.uk/coronavirus
We will do our best to keep the essential facilities open (e.g. water supply, sewage pump-out and chemical toilet disposal), for those who need them.
Thank you all for your co-operation and understanding during these very difficult times.
Best wishes,
Peter ParkinsonDirector – Bridgewater Canal

Opened on 17th July 1761, the Bridgewater Canal has a special place in history as the first canal in Britain to be built without following an existing watercourse, and so became a model for those that followed it.
The Bridgewater Canal is surrounded by a beautiful environment rich with flora and fauna.
