Bridgewater Way Opens in Salford

Councillors, representatives from Peel and local supporters met on the bank of the Bridgewater Canal today to officially open the next phase of the Bridgewater Way route in Salford. This phase of work concentrated on the section of the Bridgewater Way which runs approximately 1 mile from the M602 towards Worsley, adding to the completed route between Liverpool Road, Hall Bank and the M602.

The Bridgewater Way canal towpath regeneration in Salford is funded by Salford West, Salford Local Transport Plan, the Bridgewater Canal Trust and canal owners, Peel. It is hoped that this phase of work in Salford will encourage more use of the improved towpath and connect the Bridgewater Way Regional Route 82 to the National Route 55 in order to create a longer bicycle route in the area.

Louise Morrissey, Director of Land and Planning at Peel said, “We are delighted the next phase of the Bridgewater Way in Salford has opened. The work will be a great advantage for the area by opening up the canal side’s access and allowing for more use by the local community, pedestrians and cyclists. The works here add to the already completed approximately 12 miles of the total 40 mile route along the Bridgewater Canal which has been made safer and more accessible.”

Councillor Derek Antrobus, Salford City Council lead member for planning said, "This is another important landmark in reconnecting the Bridgewater Canal to local communities in Salford. It is fitting that the Bridgewater Canal, which heralded a revolution in transport when it was opened, is at the forefront of another sustainable transport revolution in Salford. Together with investment in Irwell River Park and the Manchester Bolton Bury Canal, this latest achievement is contributing to the biggest ever improvement in walkways and cycleways that the city has seen."

Cllr Bernard Pennington, Chairman of the Bridgewater Canal Trust said, “It is great news that the next phase of Bridgewater Way work in Salford is now complete. We hope the regeneration work will encourage walkers and cyclists to use the route more often.”
