Today the Bridgewater Canal is a shared leisure facility, used by fishermen, pedestrians and pleasure craft.
The Bridgewater Canal is a vital link for cruising between the Southern and Northern canal networks and is part of the popular cruising route known as the Cheshire ring of canals.
A number of other inland waterways connect with the Bridgewater Canal at the following locations.
- The Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook near Runcorn.
- The Leeds Liverpool Canal at King Street Bridge Leigh
- The Rochdale Canal at Castlefield in Manchester
- The Manchester Ship Canal at Pomona Lock Manchester
Cyclists are now being encouraged to use improved sections of the canal towpath known as the Bridgewater Way. To identify where cycling is permitted please see the section on cycling for our cycling code and the Bridgewater Way.
When using the canal or its towpath please take all litter home and show due consideration to other users activities and the canal’s neighbours at all times.
